Infectious diseases in North Eastern Argentina: Treponematosis and its connection with population concentration

This article presents cases of treponematosis in at least five individuals from different archeological sites southern North Eastern Argentina and discusses how these were linked to the ways life pre-Hispanic groups that inhabited this region for 2000 years. We carried out reanalysis reinterpretation some pathological cases, including a comparison between our observations previous diagnoses made by other authors. Thirty-three bone elements corresponding minimum number adults three analyzed. These excavated early mid-20th century, materials are currently under guardianship museums. The macroscopic description lesions was surveyed. long bones, mainly saber shin appearance tibiae, one cranial vault consistent with development treponematosis. diagnosis south adds two previously reported. discussion is focused on link presence pathology ethnohistorical, archeological, environmental context studied area.
